Celebrating Banned Books Week

Beginning in the 1980's the American Library Association (ALA) began recognizing books that were being challenged in school settings based on their content. Usually observed during the last week of September, Banned Books Week celebrates our freedom to read. This year, the theme is Censorship Divides Us.

According to the ALA, "sharing stories important to us means sharing a part of ourselves. Books reach across boundaries and build connections between readers. Censorship, on the other hand, creates boundaries." You can read more about the Banned Books Week on the ALA's website.

During the week, DCG HS students and staff have opportunities to learn more about Banned Books Week and talk about their experiences with books that have appeared on the ALA's challenged or banned lists. Students can sign up for a Banned Books Week-themed advisory time where they can access an interactive Google Slide one-pager.
CLICK HERE to access the one-pager.

Students and staff can also take in a library display featuring banned and challenged books from the last 10+ years. Sticky notes provide information about why the title was challenged or banned.
Thank you to students who helped create the display!

Also during this advisory time--and at a recent staff meeting--students and teachers could pose for "mug shots" as readers of banned or challenged books. As a fun library inside joke, the 098 number on the sign refers to prohibited or restricted materials!
