πŸ“š✨YA Literature Trivia

What better way to head into spring break than with an enthusiastic round of YA Lit Trivia during advisory! The library recently hosted a trivia event that students could choose as an advisory offering, and based on their enthusiasm, more trivia events will follow!

Two rounds of 10 questions pitted students against each other in rounds centered on both classic and contemporary young adult literature. Students could choose to work individually or in teams--and name themselves in clever and "punny" ways.

Teams dove into the depths of general literature trivia as well as character trivia. The event not only highlighted the joy of reading but also fostered a sense of community as shared their experiences and passion for some of the titles. (The Outsiders and Dally and Ponyboy! Scythe! Brian and the Hatchet series!) Winners celebrated their literary knowledge and could choose a prize from The Prize Vault, πŸ˜€ leaving everyone with smiles on their faces and a renewed appreciation for the magic found within the pages of our library's collection.

The Trivia Extravaganza was more than a competition; it was a shared experience of friendly rivalry and a collective love for the written word. Until the next literary challenge, happy reading!

πŸ“šFan Art

Today's offering in advisory was YA lit fan art, a joint endeavor with a colleague, and was one of the Wellness Wednesday choices students could choose to attend. After a brief Slides presentation to share examples of personal fan art and general ideas, students had time to choose from several things: explore examples online, share their own art with one another if they had it with them, and create.

Students were encouraged to look online for inspiration.

Some students even brought along their own sketch books.

Some students' work appears below, and many more pieces will be included along with these in a display featured near the bookshelves.

πŸ‘€ #TakeALookTuesday--Refugees' Experience Edition

World events have brought refugees' stories to the forefront again, and as is often the case, YA literature and nonfiction books can help build knowledge and create empathy among readers. Several refugees' stories can be found in the library.

While many of these stories--both fiction and nonfiction--tell stories of violence and struggle, despair and change, and uncertainty and fear, they are also stories of hope, acceptance, triumph, and love.

The group of books highlighted include several time periods and are set in a variety of places around the world. Some reflect a single refugee's story while others include the experiences of many. While the character's refugee story is central to the plot, other subplots add to the overall telling of the story. Sports, political turmoil, fairy tales, terrorism, bombings, romance, and mental disabilities are featured alongside the refugees' experiences.

Stop by the library to take a look at these titles, and be sure to check MackinVIA for electronic copies of these and additional refugees' stories!

πŸ‘€ #TakeALookTuesday--Movie Adaptation Edition

We've all heard the expression and seen different versions of the memes, but, indeed, the book *is* better than the movie.

That said, there are several YA books that have been made into movies over the years--the Harry Potter books-to-movies leading the pack. Many more titles, though, have been adapted for the big screen, and many of them you've probably seen, like these:

According to Epic Reads, many more titles are headed our way as series or movies coming to streaming services or to theaters, some as early as this year. For the latest new, Epic Reads recommends their YouTube playlist for casting and release date information (“All the YA Book-to-Screen Adaptations in the Works Right Now.” Epic Reads, 27 Sept. 2021).

So which YA titles can we expect to see? Take a look!
There's still time to read the book ahead of the movie or series release--why not stop by the library and take a look?
